October was quite the month! There was a strange turn of events and it felt like I was winging it the entire month just to stay afloat! We experienced many wonderful high moment and some seriously dark lows. We laughed, cried, feared, mourned and definitely reflected. And through reflection we were able to pause for a moment and be enlightened; giving us the strength and courage to rise above the fog (Phew!).
Soooo, this week’s style post couldn’t come at a better time. I spotted this massive 40 x 25 foot “Kits Wings” mural on Burrard Street (at 4th Ave), back in August. It was still in it’s initial design phase at the time and I knew at some point we had to shoot here and share this artwork with all of you! This piece, painted by the talented Sandy Pellat, is extraordinary and I’m awe struck every time I walk by it. It’s such an uplifting, inspiring, motivating and spiritual piece — which pretty much sums up my current headspace. Next time you’re heading into the studio in Kits, be sure to check it out for a fun photo opp! If you’re on Instagram don’t forget to tag #kitswings.
With the cool winter air upon us, I wanted to feature my favorite over-sized metallic coated sweater-dress. I love this piece so much because a) it’s extremely comfy and versatile, b) it feels like I’m wrapped in a cozy cocoon, and c) it’s a thrift-store find!! I styled it with my black Joe Fresh Essentials Long Sleeve Tee underneath, for extra warmth, as well as my black opaque Calvin Klein tights (my fave), which I picked up from Winners. Also from Winners, (last season) are these black leather platformed ankle booties. They really anchor the outfit and are substantial enough to support the overall look. Plus they look so great with my oversized floppy clutch and hat.
For a holiday party look, wear this dress on it’s own with strappy stiletto heels, a Valentino “Rock-Stud” inspired clutch and a leather jacket. Add a killer metallic cuff bracelet and a large cocktail ring, and you’re ready to celebrate!
For a casual urban approach, you could pair this sweater-dress with your distressed jeans, a white collared shirt underneath, topped off with a pretty vintage broach (centered at the top button of the collar). Slip on your white Adidas “Stan Smith” sneakers and an oversized wool coat, like the Aritzia “Wintour” Coat, and instead of a clutch, opt for a large leather tote bag.
I LOOOVE a bold lip; be it bright red, hot pink or a deep burgundy shade like this Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in “Rubino”. It’s a strong, long wearing, full coverage liquid lipstick that dries matte and seriously lasts all day! I used my “Love Nadia – NadittudeTM ” Lip Brush ($12) to apply a light coat as a base, then layered Burt’s Bees Lip Balm over top to sheer out the color and add extra moisture.
These “Kits Wings”, for me, represent freedom, warmth, love, confidence and acceptance. They remind me to be fearless and simply spread my wings and fly to my highest potential! They remind me to continue to be a positive, supportive and uplifting force for those facing dark times. And to celebrate the beautiful angels we’ve lost over the years (especially over the past few months) and continue to do well by them and make them proud!
In honor of Remembrance Day, I dedicate this post to all of the those who battled and died for our rights and freedoms. I give thanks to the special angels who passed on and are watching over us from above. And I pray for anyone out there, who at times, could use some wings like these to carry them up and over those unexpected and challenging times life presents. – God Bless.
