Brooches…

Photographed by: Daniella Guzzo

It’s time to raid Nonna’s jewellery case
the brooch is back and with a vengeance!  Designers like Prada, Dolce and Gabbana and Balenciaga displayed this trend all over the runway for Fall/Winter 2015 and I couldn’t be happier!  It’s time to put our statement necklaces aside (
well maybe just for a while) and replace them with a lovely collection of pins and brooches! There’s something about these pretty pieces of art that I’m drawn to.  I’ve been collecting them for years because they look gorgeous pinned onto a toque, in an up styles or even to replace a lost bottom on a coat.  Plus with all the capes and oversized scarves we’re so enjoying this time of year, a cluster of brooches can fasten thing up and look sparkling.  AAAND
they’re a great holiday gift idea!  Multi-purpose, functional and beautiful — that’s what I call NadittudeTM!

 Outfit Details:

I call this look “Pretty Punk”.   I love elements of punk/grunge fashion such as black leather, plaid and grommets.  It a style that has influenced fashion for decades.  Punk/grunge is rebellious, unorthodox and rock n’roll.    It can feel a little harsh worn head-to-toe for most people, so this week I’m showing you how you can inject it in subtle ways.

To create this “Punk” inspired outfit, I pulled 4 key pieces from my wardrobe:  my black leather jacket, these super cute pleated windowpane trousers, my metallic platform loafers and my red Alexander Wang bag.  To “pretty” things up, I layered this soft cashmere polka-dot print sweater atop my denim blouse.  I then added a cluster of dainty brooches to make an impactful and unorthodox statement.

The great thing about these pieces is that they work beautifully individually and can be coordinated so many different ways.  I also love that punk/grunge styling can work for both street and office style!

Makeup Tutorial – Estee Lauder New Dimension

Photographed by: Union Photographers

I’m playing with Estee Lauder Cosmetics this week and I’m excited to test out their New Dimension series.  These user friendly products provide the facial contours a tighter and more sculpted look.  It’s contouring made easy and that looks natural.

Step 1: Prepare the skin

I started with a clean skin,  I tested out Estee Lauder’s “New” New Dimension Expert Liquid Tape ($78).  This treatment contains fast-acting polymers that help firm, tone and give a more sculpted, lifted look around your eyes and contours of the face.

Tip:

–  Apply a thin film on clean, dry skin.

–  Don’t apply over skincare or makeup. It should be the very first step in your regimen after cleansing.

–  Do let it dry completely before applying any other formulas.

–  Do gently pat or tap on any following formulas so you don’t “break” the Liquid Tape.

Step 2: Even out the complexion with foundation

Estee Lauder’s has deisgned this new Double Wear “Makeup to  Go” Liquid Foundation ($50).  This innovative compact keeps liquid foundation spill-proof and convenient to travel with.   To apply, simply press the button to release the foundation and apply with fingers or a sponge.  Press once for light touch up and twice for more coverage.  I think this is genius packaging!  It’s perfect for traveling with and it provides 8 hour wear.

Note:

This Double wear foundation is a little different from the original formula.  This contains tri-moisture complex that leaves skin looking smooth and natural.

Step 3: Contour and Highlight the face.

To accentuate my face in a natural and sculpted way, I used Estee Lauder’s New Dimension Shape + Sculpt Face Kit ($55).  This is a cream based contour palette  comes with a light shade to accentuate and bring light to your features, and a dark shade to contour the face.

Application Tips:

(follow instructions and photos below…)

–  Start by dipping the outer part of your thumb into the darkest shade of the scuplting kit, then press your thumbs together to transfer the color onto the other thumb.

–  Next, with the palms of your hands facing up, place your thumbs below your cheekbones and pressed them into my face to mark a shadow line.

–  Lastly, using the angled sponge applicator or a foundation brush, blend out the shadow line using diagonal back strokes toward the ear until the line is blended.

Step 4: Highlight the high points of the face

Dip your foundation brush into the lightest shade of the contour palette then lightly blend on the high points of the face (ie: cheek bones, bridge of nose, brow bone…), to enhance and sculpt the face.

Step 5: Apply Concealer

Brighten under the eyes by applying the light shade of the contour kit

Step 6:  Fill and Shape Eye Brows

Estee Lauder launched their “New” Brow Now brow defining pencil.  This gel pencil creates a natural or fuller-looking brow and glides on easily for long-wearing, buildable, water-resistant color.  It lasts up to 12 hours and has a built in spooled brush on the end.  I really enjoy using this brow pencil and it has become my new favorite!

Step 6:  Apply Eye Shadow

To dress the eyes, I’m using Estee Lauder’s “New” Pure Color Envy Defining Eyeshadow in “Strong Current”.  This new formula provides color purity and can be applied dry, for a softer more translucent finish, or wet, for more intensity and depth.  It’s crease-resistant, non-flaking and talc-free.

Step 8:  Apply Lipgloss

To complete the look, I’m using Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy Lip Volumizer ($32).  This product plumps, hydrates and smoothes the lips.  It goes on clear, then turns to a rosy glow that revives the lip tone.

Wardrobe Apparel…

Photographed by: Daniela Ciuffa

I met Alexandra Thompson a few year ago at an art exhibit that our mutual friend and fashion designer, Malena Grotrian, was hosting. She had an incredible style sensibility and  I was immediately drawn to her warm and friendly personality.   I remember it vividly; Alex was heading off to London the next day, on business.  She was wearing black leather pants, blue suede strappy heels, a cute fur toque and
oh yeah, she smelled AMAZING!!  I’m serious, I fell in love with her scent and couldn’t stop sniffing her.  In fact, she smelled so good that when I travelled to Paris, a few months later, I purchased a bottle of that Chanel Coco Noir and wear it to this day!  So you see, it’s no surprise that a woman as stylish as she, would end up opening her own boutique.  Welcome to Wardrobe Apparel

When did you start your business and how did you come up with the concept

The idea struck me when I was hiking in Nepal after completing my MBA. I had spent years curating my own wardrobe while travelling and realized 90% of it wasn’t from the city of Vancouver. Every piece had a very specific role in my closet, like the perfect cocktail dress or tuxedo jacket.
Since then, it’s been 18 months of building this concept of helping women to engage and curate their own personal wardrobes.

What can clients expect when they shop in your store?

We’re reintroducing the concept of timeless, investment pieces, but we also carry fabulous seasonal pieces, most of which you can’t shop anywhere else in Canada. We also carry limited quantities so our customer knows they’re only getting the best and most unique

Who does the buying and how do you determine what to bring into your store?

For now, my Creative Partner and I are doing all the buying to ensure the vision is consistent and strong during the beginning of our journey.  A lot of what gets chosen has to fit within our criteria.  We choose designers that have a consistent aesthetic, beautiful tailoring and overall excellent quality.  We want you to walk away with a forever piece.

What’s your definition of being a confident woman?

Owning yourself, your actions and caring deeply for those that support you. Owning your own behaviour and evaluating it regularly will give you a deep respect for who you are in that moment and give you some indication of who you can be.

Which do you prefer: New York or LA? Paris or London? Coffee or Tea? Wine or Champagne?

You’ll either find me drinking tea (always) and reading the Economist in London or soaking up the arts with a glass of wine in Paris. Overall, Tea is my anchor and champagne is the occasional thrill.

What are the staple pieces you think every woman should have in their wardrobe?

Little black dress, fitted blazer, slacks and a killer pair of heels. I also think there has to be a Gown. You need that piece that makes you feel impeccable and that you can pull out at the drop of a hat.

Based on my 7 Style Sacraments, what would you say that your style category is – Causal, Classic , Chic, Charming or Couture?

We do have casual pieces, but overall everything is a mix of classic, chic and couture. My personal styles trends along a modern contradiction, so the store works well into my closet.

Nadia Albano, Wardrobe Apparel, Greta Constantine Dress, Daniela Ciuffa Photography

Who are your style inspirations/icons?

It’s always been a combination of Monica Bellucci, a rodeo queen and anything from John Galliano’s days at Christian Dior. Odd mix for some, but when you come in to the store it shows.

What’s the next for WA? Any new projects coming up?

We’re always planning the next big move and developing how Wardrobe Apparel fits into the city.  Coming up, we’ll be at Crème de la Crème offering custom Greta Constantine dress options for wedding parties, a relationship we’re proud to share, and lately our focus has been on expanding our online store with the goal to offer shoppers (locally and throughout Canada) access to our designers.  Our store is a wonderful hub of energy and collaboration. Come say Hi! You never know where a conversation with us might lead!

Red…

Photographed by: Daniella Guzzo

Red.  A color known for it’s energizing qualities, it excites the emotions and motivates us to take action.  It’s warm and positive, masculine and strong, and in Eastern cultures it’s a color of good look.  These, and the fact that this gorgeous Alexnder Wang “Mini Rockie” bag caught my eye at Holt Renfrew, gave me every reason to invested in it.  I don’t have a lot of red in my wardrobe (unless you count my signature red lipstick as part of my wardrobe) but I do  love incorporating a bit of an unexpected hit of color for a little personality.

Outfit Details:

When pulling an outfit together, I always suggest my Style Sacrament “DLDB ™” – Dark, Light, Dull Bright.  I believe that a balanced and cohesive outfit consists of contrast, color and texture – aka: something dark, light, dull and bright.

This week I styled my black Club Monaco “Karter Culottes” with this over sized windowpane print vent blouse from Winners.  The black bottoms and cream top are contrasting and balance each other (Dark and Light).  The windowpane print in the blouse, the pebbled texture of the leather purse and the black suede pumps each add an element of texture and dimension to the ensemble (Dull).  Finally, the silver hardware on the base of my bag, along with my arm cuff, add the shine factor, and when you look at the overall outfit, the purse plays the leading roll (Bright).

Lipstick:

I looove me a red lip!  I alternate between three or four different brands and shade.  This week I’m wearing MAC “Ruby Woo”, which is a very matte and vivid blue-red.

Jeweliette Shop…

What glitters isn’t always gold.  Eu contraire mon freer!  What glitters is, in fact, Jeweliette Jewellery — home of Vancouver’s favorite sparkle duo, Elsa and Madalena Corsi.  This dynamic and award winning mother-daughter team have been sprinkling their sparkly goodness at countless weddings, runways and special events.  They’ve been featured in hundreds of publications across Canada and internationally, and will be showcasing their beautiful jewellery at the Creme de la Creme Grand Wedding Showcase on Sunday, November 8, 2015.

I caught up with these lovelies last week and lucky for me, I picked up a few new custom pieces!  One of which was named after me!! (I’m blushing!)

When did you start your business and how did you come up with the concept?

Our shop was born in 1991 on a cart in Lougheed Mall. Back then our “thing” was hand painted leather jewelry!  Since then we’ve evolved our collection, changed locations twice and our store name once.  (our long-time clients will remember that before we were Jeweliette, we were known as Sharp and Friends).

What can clients expect when they shop in your store?

A different shopping experience! What you see is not always what you get in our shop. Although we have some beautiful ready to wear pieces for sale, it’s also a place where inspirations and ideas evolve and unfold into custom pieces and special projects!

Madalena:  Casual —  Casual but sparkly! She loves jeans and tee shirts with a pile of necklaces!

Makeup Tutorial – Laure Mercier.

Photographed by: Union Photographers

I’m excited to be featuring Laura Mercier Cosmetics in this week’s makeup tutorial.  Her philosophy is to “empower women, all over the world, to express and embrace their individual beauty”.   Through her vision, innovative products, iconic makeup artistry and stylish French heritage; every woman can gains confidence and the ability to create her own flawless face.  I echo Laura’s beauty philosophy and invite you to follow the steps below to learn how I created this Fall/Winter inspired look using Laura Mercier products.

Step 1: Start with a clean face, then add primer.

After cleansing my skin with Laura Mercier Oil-Free Foam One-Step Cleanser.  I moisturized my skin, then applied Foundation Primer + Radiance all over my face to minimize any imperfections, create a radiant glow and to prepare the skin for foundation.

Step 2: Even out complexion.

Instead of applying a full face of foundation, I strategically blended on a sheer application of Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage Concealer to what I call “The Diamond” area of the face.  The Diamond area is located on the center of the face which starts in between the eyebrows, into the bridge of the nose, widens into the inner cheek area, then narrows again at the chin.

This technique highlights and brightens the center of the face, where we naturally find discoloration and imperfections.  It creates a no-makeup-makeup look and is ideal for women who don’t like to wear a full face of foundation but want to look polioshed and refreshed.  It’s also a time saver for women on the go.

Step 3: Create a smokey eye.

To dress the eyes, I’m using Laura Mercier Caviar Stick in two tones.  On the eye lid, I used “Coco”, a rich golden-brown shade, to create a smokey eye.

Step 4: Rim the lower lash line for extra intensity.

I used the Caviar Stick in “Plum” to rim the lower lash line and into the water line.  Both shades compliment my eye color and creates a subtle color blocking effect.

Step 5: Apply Mascara.

To amplify the lashes, I curled them, them coated them with Laura Mercier “Extra Sculpting Mascara”.  This new creamy formulation gives lashes built-in memory control for mega lengthening and styling.

Grey…

Photographed by: Daniella Guzzo

When in doubt, wear black!  Well, that’s usually my motto, but this season I’m saying yes to hues of grey!  Although we Vancovuerites will be seeing plenty of grey skys in our forecast, I’m embracing this shade to keep things cool and break up my common colour palette of black-on-black-on-black.  Sometimes black can feel a little intense – even unaproachable.  So to lighten things up, I’m showing you a few of my favorite staple pieces that you might want to incoporate in your wardrobe this season.

Wardrobe Details:

There’s something about a leather jackets that make me feel strong and uber cool, and this beautiful piece is no exception!  I scooped this up at Winners this summer $250. The brand is called Selected Femme ; a Danish based company.  Their design esthetic is very clean, modern and chic.  I will admit that when I saw durable, pebbled leather shell, I almost hesitated to buy it!  We were having such gorgeous weather at the time and shopping for Fall outerwear was the last thing on my mind.  I’m glad I came to my senses and purchased it because this is probably one of the best investments I’ve made.  It’s a timeless staple piece that will carry it’s weight for years to come.  My long sleeve top is from one of my favorite stores on the planet, Club Monaco.  This staple can be coordinated with both a casual and workwear enables, and is an ideal piece for layering.  Last but not least,  my slim fit jeans by JBrand.  I find that JBrand is a great fit for my curvy body.  The “Maria” cut features a skinny leg with a high-rise waist (Thank you!) and a slimming silhouette, through hips and legs, that holds its shape.

Don’t forget your mani!

I’m a regular at  the new Joyride Nail Salon, on W. 4th and Burrard, in Vancouver.  If you haven’t had a chance to experience it, you must!  It’s steps away from our Nadia Albano Style Inc headquarters, and Sadhbh (pronounced Sive) is my go-to gal for a great mani/pedi!  She’s been doing my nails since day one, and the entire team is lovely and extremely professional.  For this week’s post, I chose a two-tone grey combination; mostly because I liked both shades of grey and couldn’t decide on just one.

Burberry Beauty at Nordstrom Vancouver!

Last week I was at the opening of the new Nordstrom flagship store, in Downtown Vancouver, to meet with Patricia Bensimo; the National Trainer for Burberry Cosmetics.  Patricia walked us through the new Burberry installation to show us all the wonderful beauty product Burberry has to offer!  The store looked incredible and the counter was buzzing with customers getting their makeup done.

Bensimo explained that Burberry beauty is effortless, timeless and runway-inspired.  The products are easy to apply and are often multi-use.  It evokes the quintessential “British” look of a natural glowing skin, which stands at the heart of Burberry philosophy.  It’s inspired by the brand’s “British” heritage and outdoor roots and that the line was developed by Wendy Rowe (Burberry’s Makeup Artistic Consultant) and Christopher Bailey (Burberry’s Cheif Creative and Executive Officer).

Lip Velvet

I’m a sucker for bold colored, matte lipstick and the Burberry Lip Velvet series has no shortage of fabulous shade!  The best thing about this formula is that it’s highly pigmented, non-drying and leaves a creamy and soft-matte finish.  My favorite shades are “Military Red” and “Ox Blood” – LOVE!

Burberry Cashmere Foundation

New to the Burberry range is the Cashmere – Flawless Soft-Matte Foundation which offers a soft-matte finish and cashmere-like comfort.  It provides a light-weight texture and breathable, long-wear durability.  It also contains SPF 20 in the lighter shades and SPF 15 in the darker shades, to protect the skin against UVA and UVB rays.  I tested out the new Cashmere Concealer, which has a fabric tip applicator and allows for easy application and long-wear finish.

Tip:  Patricia suggested using Burberry Fresh Glow Luminous Fluid Base, prior to applying foundation, to create a light fluid illuminating complexion.

My Burberry

I’m a fragrance junkie and I absolutely fell in love with the My Burberry fragrance, which encapsulates the essence of a spring garden.  The design details of this glass bottle reflects iconic details of the Burberry trench coat.  The ribbon is made in a stone-colored gabardine fabric, while the lid resembles the button on the Burberry trench.  Very clever, Burberry!

Patricia, THANK YOU for taking the time to see me on such a busy opening week!  Congratulations to you and your incredibly hard working team on the re-launch of Burberry Cosmetics.  It’s always a pleasure to connect with you and catch up and I look forward to seeing you again on your next trip to Vancouver!  – Bisous xo

SPIN HAIR WE CARE!

SPIN HAIR WE CARE!

Photography by: Daniela Ciuffa

I’m thrilled to be collaborating with Eastwood Cycle and AG Hair to launch several pop-up blow dry bars this fall titled “Spin Hair We Care”.  Here’s how it works:  If you’re a Vancouverite looking for a heart-racing workout, followed by a primping session with a little NadittudeTM, you can attend one of Eastwood Cycle’s classes, then sit back and enjoy a relaxing blowout courtesy of Nadia Albano Style Inc.  The blowout menu will feature four styles: Après Spin, Beachy Waves, Cycler off Duty, Spin it Straight, and for non cyclists – a No Spin Street Style. Each blowout is offered at a cost of $25 each.  The best part about this event is that proceeds go directly to the Women Leading Change foundation. Founded by AG Hair, this charitable organization builds schools to educate young girls in some of Africa’s most impoverished regions.

Eastwood’s classes are held throughout the day, with Friday’s first session starting at 6:15 a.m. and the final class ending at 5:30 p.m. Cycling enthusiasts (and blowout fans alike) can get in on one of these special events by signing up for one of the following pop-up dates: the launch on Friday, Sept. 25; Friday, Oct. 23; or Friday, Nov. 27. All blowout #SpinHairWeCare sessions will be hosted in Eastwood Cycle’s headquarters located at 154 West Hastings St. in the heart of the historic Gastown neighbourhood.
