It was early in 2014 when I first met, singer/songwriter, Christina Perri. She was on tour in Vancouver when I had the pleasure of doing her hair and makeup for her concert, and from the moment we met we hit it off! There are many things that I love about working with Christina, aside from her incredibly strong yet delicate voice and her musical ability. Firstly, she is a crazy cool Italian chic with an impeccable taste in fashion! She has an incredible sense of humor and has a smile that melts hearts — she loves to laugh! She is kind and jovial, and shares quirky and wonderful stories that life has presented to her. Mostly though, she is super down to earth and extremely caring of the people around her. I continue to be drawn to her uplifting, light and positive energy, and truly have a special place in my heart for this lady! I feel like I’ve know her for a lifetime, which make it that much more enjoyable to have work with her.
In December, Christina invited me to join her, and her lovely entourage, to do her hair and makeup for the filming of the music video for her new song, “The Words”. I worked with an incredibly talented crew of professional, including the ever-so-charmin Colin O’Donoghue of “Once Upon a Time”. What a true gentleman, not to mention super handsome!;) Here’s a behind the scenes look our experience together, and my one-on-one interview with this beautiful CP!
When did you catch your first break as an artist?
It was 8pm on June 30th of 2010 when a TV show called SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE played one and half minutes of a little demo I wrote called “Jar of Hearts”. From that moment on everything was different. 220,000 people bought the song on itunes, and I got noticed by every single record label. I flew to NYC the next day and luckily was ready. I had been writing songs and playing guitar and piano since I was 15 so I played my little heart out for everyone and penned a deal on July 21, 2010 with Atlantic Records. I have not stopped since!!
You share much of your life on social media. What is one thing we don’t know about you?
I’m so open and transparent everywhere with everyone — it’s literally the only way I know how to be. I guess something most people don’t know about me is that I love musical theatre and I can remember every important date in my life; it’s sort of my super power!
What made you decide to cast the oh-so-handsome Colin O’Donoghue in your music video?
It started out as a little joke because I had to make a top 5 list of men who I wanted to have as my leading man. Naturally I picked my favorites, and Colin was number one! I never thought he would agree to do the video. Everyone knows that I’m a huge “Once Upon a Time” fan, and Captain Hook is my favorite character, so Colin was a dream come true for me. He was so lovely and talented..and..kind..and fun to work with. I’ll never forget it!
What is your connection with penguins?
They’ve always been my favorite animal, even as a kid. The scene in “Mary Poppins” while they’re all dancing together was always my favorite scene, so I’ve always loved them. I also think they’re romantic because they mate for life and I’m a hopeless romantic. I wrote a song called “Penguin”, on my first album, and my fans starting calling themselves “Perri’s Penguins”. And now it’s so crazy, they bring me penguin gifts all over the world. At this point, I couldn’t be more emotionally connected to penguins!
What are your 5 makeup and beauty products you can’t live without?
I love using…
- Natura Bisse Face Wash and “The Cure” Cream.
- Bumble and Bumble Styling Spray
- The Classic Mabelline “Great Lash” Mascara
- I cant live without my MAC Mineralize Skin Finish “Soft and Gentle”
- I’m never ever without my Smith’s Rosebud Salve Lip Balm
I know you love tattoos, how many do you have, and how do you decide when it’s time to add a new one?
I love tattoos! I have about 75. I get one all the time, and then I go a long time without getting one. It’s so random and spontaneous; I really have no method. I get a feeling or an idea and then I just go and get one. Maybe I should think more about it, lol! But I go for it… and now all my tattoos tell so many stories I don’t think I’ll ever stop.
What was the inspiration behind the creation of “The Words” video?
I wrote the idea for “The Words” music video, after Colin O’donoghue couldn’t be in my music video for “Burning Gold”. He was supposed to be my leading man in that and when the timing didn’t work out, I promised Colin I would write my next video starring him. I don’t think he believed me, but I always keep my promises! So I thought of what the song means to me, which is being afraid of love and admitting you’re in love; that small moment right before it really begins – that’s how the idea was born. It was also totally my intention to make this video all about Colin, and I’m just singing to him the whole time. It worked out perfectly!
Why did you decide to shoot your music video in Vancouver?
Colin was still shooting his TV show “ONCE UPON A TIME” (which is filmed in Vancouver), so it made the most sense that we all come to Vancouver and film it up there to make it easy for him. Also the Director. iouri, took my idea and made it beautiful using everything Vancouver had to offer. The video didn’t even come to life until we landed in Vancouver and it turned out more beautiful than I even imagined!
What inspires you when writing your music?
Emotions. It’d be easy to just say “love” but its not always about a relationship with someone, it could be how I’m feeling about trying to be myself and dealing with issues due to my career, but it’s always when I’m having a big feeling or emotion that I actually write a song.
Based on my “7 Style SacramentsTM”, what would you say your Style Category is — Casual, Classic, Charming, Chic, or Couture?
I describe my style as “casual and chic”… I love a little of both. Also tomboy-ish; I love sneakers, hats and leather jackets 🙂
You’ve toured all over the world; where is your favorite place you’ve travel to?
That’s so hard to say… everywhere I’ve been has been amazing and unique in its own way. I love all the people I meet along the way the most, but if I had to pick maybe my Top 5 I’d say:
- Philadelphia (my home town)
- Los Angeles (my home now)
What’s next for you, Christina Perri?
Touring the whole world! I have so many more places to go and so many more people to sing for. Then after this year, I have no idea! I can’t wait to find out 🙂
Christina, it’s incredible to work with you! I appreciate you taking the time out of your busy schedule do this interview with me! I cherish our time together and look forward to seeing you back in Vancouver very soon. A presto, Bella!
