It’s so empowering for me when I meet successful, intelligent, confident, outgoing and like-minded women! It makes me feel like going to the highest mountain top and shouting their name in praises for all to hear! And that’s exactly what I’m doing this week, after having visited Heather Huntingford of Kiss and Makeup; a North Vancouver Apothecary and Apparel Boutique located on Upper Lonsdale. Although I’ve met Heather only a few times before, I feel like I’ve known her all of my life. She is a breath of fresh air and truly delightful to spend time and connect with. Oh
and her two loving and super affectionate fury friends Mink & Pods — ADORBS!
North Vancouver has such a casual vibe, and being surrounded by towering trees and mountainous air, I felt that a lumberjack inspired, plaid shirt was in order! Plaid looks like it’s here to stay and that’s totally fine by me. It’s one of those patterns that can be styled in a cool and laid-back 90’s grunge/punk way, or extremely classic and smart al-la English Countryside/Burberry-esque fashion. The point is that everyone can wear it. In saying that, I do like mixing patterns together (floral, plaid, animal, geodetic etc.), such as I did with leopard print boots and red gingham shirt. It adds texture, dimension and personality to an outfit. It’s a good idea, though, to stick to the general “3 pattern only” rule when mixing and matching, otherwise it can look like a hot mess! This is why I chose to wear my dark green skinny wax-coated jeans. Keeping my bottom half a solid color block anchors the outfit and doesn’t compete with the other patterns I’m wearing. Plus, the complimentary color to red is green, so these jeans were a perfect fit!
When did you open your boutique and how did you come up with the overall design and business concept?
I opened the original Kiss and Makeup in the Village at Park Royal in 2004, after completing BCIT’s Intense Venture Program. I wanted to create a beauty boutique that demystified cosmetics and was completely anti-intimidating. Someplace fun and full of discovery. I have super-sensitive skin, so all the skin care and cosmetics that make it onto our shelves have to pass the Heather test first. In 2010 we moved into a larger space within the Village so that we could expand our clothing, footwear and accessories lines. Change rooms were nice! This October we became early adopters of the Lonsdale neighbourhood and are excited about the growth and development that’s to come.
What can customers expect when they shop in your store?
Kiss and Makeup is really an extension of my lifestyle. So if you like to live conscientiously, laugh, drink prosecco and be surrounded by useful, beautiful things, I think we’ll get along just fine. My managing/buying partner Trish Cox and I travel extensively to curate fashion, beauty and lifestyle collections for the store that our clients crave. We carry everything from Mackage outerwear to Anne Sportun Fine Jewelry, Routine natural deodorant to aromatherapy candles, the latest Ilia lipstick and Sjal eye creme, to dog collars and Pendleton blankets. The setting is pure rustic chic mash, and most of our staff have been with us for several years. I’m really proud of the expertise of our makeup artists, everyone’s product knowledge, and of course we all have our own personal sense of style to bring to the mix.
Who is your style inspiration/ icon and why?
I don’t have one in particular. I’m a Pisces – I like too many things and styles. Being the last sign in the zodiac I pull inspiration from everyone.
What is a staple piece that every woman should have in her wardrobe?
For Vancouver at this time of year, when it’s getting damp, dark and dreary: a vest, faux fur or otherwise. I am presently wearing mine with my pj’s, but it also works to add a layer of warmth and cool factor to your leather jacket, or under your rain coat, around the house or at work. Versatility, is what we require for something to be deemed a staple.
What are your 5 beauty products you can’t live without?
Sunscreen, always. Everyday. Soleil Toujours, is a mineral spf 45 spray that I apply to my face, hands, neck everyday. No exceptions.
Routine de-odor-cream. A natural beeswax based deodorant (that actually works). Totally not sexy to talk about I know, but it’s a highly under-rated every day item
Sjal serum 1. Liquid vitamin lift in a bottle. We’ve been together for 10 years now. I’m in love.
Ellis Faas Skin Veil Foundation Pen, more like skincare with colour than a foundation.
RMS Lip2Cheek in Demur. Mineral and organic colour for lips and cheeks, perfect to throw in your bag and go.
How do you determine what brands to carry in your store?
For skincare and beauty, they almost have to get voted onto the island by our team. We all have such different skin types from acne, allergies, psoriasis, dry skin etc. so they get rigorously tried, tested and vetted. Conscientious ingredients are key as is filling a void in the product mix in the store we may not have covered.
For clothing it’s what we need in our lives. We try to style for those who are busy and need simplicity. Things that can be worn many, many times just in different ways. Also, we’ve been at this for over 10 years now. We’ve have several brands that have been with us since day one – Ren, Sjal and Principessa, for example. We like to work with suppliers that are a pleasure to deal with. That goes a long way in my book.
Log Cabin Sweater, Cynthia Vincent $450
Apres Ski, sol angeles t-shirt $65
Rails Britt plaid shirt, $150
Fedora, Brixton $85
Shereen de Rousso black onyx and sterling necklace $400
Anne Sportun Labradorite and Moonstone wrap bracelet $450
Gypsalove clear quartz ring $90.
Based on my 7 Style Sacraments, what would you say your Style Category is — Casual, Classic, Charming, Chic, or Couture?
Casual Chic meets Country. Am all about sweatpants, diamonds, lipgloss, and denim shirts.
What do you prefer: New York or LA? Paris or Milan? Coffee or Tea? Stilettos or Flats? Leather or Lace? Sweet or Savory?
LA. West Coast girl, though I do love a good trip to NYC. Paris, je t’aime | Coffee, preferably 3. Remember I’m a Pisces, don’t make me choose | Stilettos or Flats – neither…. Cowboy boots | Leather or Lace, both, preferably together | Savory. Olives, cheese, pickles, antipasto and Wine. Heaven.
What’s the next step for Kiss and Makeup? Any new projects coming up?
Word on the street is a new space in Vancouver – coming soon!
If you had to describe yourself in 2 words, what would they be?
