I’ve been a fashion consultant for almost 15 years now and in that time, I’ve seen some closet hits and some definite misses! It often starts with clients saying “I have nothing in my closet” meanwhile, their closet is bursting at the seams with clothes they’ve had for waaaay too long. They’re using wire hangers from the dry cleaners or folding everything up because they have zero hanging space; which makes it hard find anything! Sadly, most of the standard closets out there are not very functional and require a little creativity when it comes to organization. I’ve seen (and tried) all kinds of hanging contraptions and storage saver to stay organized but truthfully, they took up too much space and most of time they just didn’t work.
It wasn’t until I invested in a new a proper wardrobe system like this Ikea Pax Wardrobe System. Honestly, it has changed my life! The entire experience with Ikea was incredible. I started off by measuring the wall space in my bedroom to it ensure that everything would fit, including the height and depth for the closet doors. Next, I designed and created my virtual “dream closet” directly on the Ikea website. It allowed me to pick the exact color, drawer style and accessory components I wanted and actually see how it would look; which always makes life so much easier! I went to Ikea with my spec details and made my final door and hardware selection, and as simple as that, my delivery and installation took no longer than one week!
1) Prior to installation, be sure to remove your baseboards and cover any electrical outlet with a plate. 2) Provide a clean working area by clearing away any furniture out of the way so that they can build out your closet (YES! No allen key necessary!) 3) Also, note that the Ikea installers must secure the wardrobe unit to the wall for obvious safety reasons. It is a strict Ikea policy in the event of an unforeseen hazard. 4) The total cost for everything (including the closet in the second bedroom) came to $1700! Such an amazing value!
I love this handy-dandy little retractable hanger accessory for displaying my collecion of necklaces. It’s also useful to hang your purses and ties; or even to display your “outfit of the day” up!
5 Simple Wardrobe Tips:
Learn the art of layering!
I like to avoid the major seasonal wardrobe changeover, and layering is a great way of maximizing your wardrobe . Luckily for us in Vancouver, our winter season is fairly mild, which allows for us to stretch out our wardrobe into an “all seasons” capsule (so to speak)! Meaning you don’t have pack up and store away all of your summer tops and dresses. All you need to do is unpack your thicker sweaters, pick up a few trendy cold-weather fashion essentials and voila! Many of our summer clothes can easily be transitioned into winter season with some layering magic. For example, wear leggings, ankle boots and a cable knit sweater over your flowy summer dress. Or, add a faux fur vest over your white eyelet blouse and distressed jeans. Top it off with a wide brimmed hat you’re good to go!
Organize by color!
This might be a little OCD for you all but, in my fashion retailing days at Club Monaco and Aritzia, we used to merchandize the stores by color and style category. Try hanging all of your like-colors together (lightest to darkest); you’ll notice immediately that not only does it look nice, it allows you to take full stock of what you have in your closet at any given time. With a simple glance, you can pull together a perfect little outfit in a snap!
Shape, Ship, Shop!
While you’re organizing your closet, be sure to take everything out and try things on! I call this process, separating the “keepers” from the “creepers”! If something in your closet doesn’t work for your body shape or is out of style, why are you holding on to it? If you have a garment that is out of shape, then ship it (donate it!) and shop for something that fits your body and current style. When you love what you have you’ll actually look great wearing it because FEEL great wearing it!
Use good hangers!
Please, please PLEASE…purchase good hangers! Ikea has a great selection of sturdy hangers in a variety of color. Wire hangers from the dry cleaners are sad and a nightmare to hang things on. They stretch out your clothes, they look terrible and they simply are not functional for daily use. Trust me when a say use good hangers!
If you are storing your summer clothing, be sure purchase plastic or fabric lined containers with a clear zip-top cover. This way, if you don’t have an Ikea Pax Wardrobe, you can neatly store these bins out of the way and under your bed. PS. I really like containers with clear tops so that you can easily see what is inside. I purchased mine at HomeSense for $19.
