I recently watched an episode of “I Love Lucy” starring Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez (
I used to always watch re-runs of this show as a kid!). I was reminded of how naturally gorgeous and comedically talented Lucille Ball was in her prime and more importantly, what a pioneer she was for many women in the entertainment industry! I love that she always put herself out there, had fun and could laugh at herself and not take herself too seriously! I recall in many episodes, Lucy & Ethel would often wear a head scarf, similar to “Rosie the Riveter”; a 1940’s war-time propaganda cartoon, which soon after represented equality for women in the workforce. This week’s style series brings us to the Westin Grand Hotel’s rooftop pool and #PopUpPatio; the perfect location to pay homage to one of my favorite Hollywood actresses of all time…
The #PopUpPatio at The Westin Grand is back for another summer, and we got to spend the day there to experience it first-hand! This temporary rooftop urban oasis is located above the bustling intersection of Homer and Robson Streets, on the 3rd floor of the The Westin Grand Hotel. This über cool lounge is open Thursday and Friday evenings, where guests can unwind and refresh after a hard day of work in this relaxed atmosphere with soft seating, green gardens and live DJ music.

Outfit Details:
To recreate the essence of Lucille Ball, (or of a curvy 1940’s pin up model) and to compliment my lovely pool and patio setting, I went with a full piece, Kenneth Cole, cutout swimsuit in a classic retro silhouette. I used this beautiful black, white and green silk scarf to wrap around my head (which I recieved as a gift over 10 years ago), to protect my head and hair from heat and UV rays. I picked up this BCBG Max Azria poncho top several years back and love the tassel fringe detail; it kind of reminds me of the 1920’s flapper era. I like to maximize my wardrobe and when I purchase anything, I need to be able to wear it at least three different ways. I usually wear this piece as a top and love the way it doubles as a swimsuit coverup. Of course, every glamours woman requires a perfect pair of oversized, dark rimmed sunglasses and these Tiffany “Victoria” sunnies were the perfect fit- très chic!
A refreshing arrey of cocktails are available at the Westin’s #PopUpPatio, including classics like the Negroni and Sazerac, and new creations like the “Pop Up Standard” (vodka, Ginger of the Indies, and lemongrass simple syrup). New this year are spiked snow cones, $1.00 Jell-O shots, and a full pitcher menu. A vaierty of wines by the glass, draft, and bottled beer are also available. View the full food and drink menu here.

Accessories:
An arm stacked with an assortment of bracelets can make quite a statment! The spiked metal piece is from Winners, the middle swarovski crystal and leather snap bracelets is one that I picked up from Jeweliette Jewellery, and the gold and cream studded bangle is from Chapters. Another staple accessory are these rosegold hoop earrings, also from Jeweliette Jewllery. They are the perfect weight and size to adorn the ears when styling your hair up and away from the face.
To create this modern summery version of 1940’s/50’s makeup, and to ensure that my makeup would last all day while lounging at the pool, I started by evening out my complexion with Make Up For Ever “Face and Body Foundation” #32 with “Full Cover Concealer”. I applied this mix to conceal under my eyes and any other imperfections on my face. I created a soft cat-eye liner using Make Up For Ever Aqua Liner, in Matte Black, curled my lashes and coated them with “Smoky Aqua Waterproof Mascara”. For the lips, I started with a wax based Bert’s Bees Lip Balm, with SPF 8, and filled in my lips with Make Up For Ever “Aqua Lip Waterproof Lip Liner” in 17C, for a matte long lasting finish. Make Up For Ever products are available at Sephora stores world wide.
